Wedding venue

When I starting looking for a venue, I was shocked at the prices. Did I mention that we are paying for the wedding ourselves, therefore making it a budget wedding?

Anyway, I eventually found the perfect location:

It's called Chapel at the farmhouse- how cute is that? We are going to have both the ceremony and reception here (huge money saver). The old farmhouse look is going to go perfect with our country theme. I loooooove it. The hubby and I even went and looked at a venue here on the base that overlooks the bay- its gorgeous, but not how I envisioned my wedding. Instead, I'm going with my country roots : )

These are pictures I took with my camera when my mom and I went to take a look, but the ones on their website from actual weddings are beautiful. I can't wait to see it done up with all my own touches!

Wee bit wednesday

{one} have you ever been stuck in an elevator?
I thought I was one time, but luckily it only lasted a few seconds. When I worked in the student union at UofA, there was an employee elevator that was super sketchy.. It would always lurch, or the doors wouldn't open right away, and some guy told me it got stuck a few times. Creepy!

{two} have you ever ridden on an elephant?
Yep, when I was little.

{three} have you ever met a well known celebrity?
Not exactly. I met a popular christian band once.

{four} do you have any food allergies?
nope.

{five} do you know how to sew?
I can hand-sew but I haven't used a machine in forever. I hand-made Chris a blanket before he went on deployment last summer!

{six} did you get an allowance when you were young?
Nope.

{seven} how often do you fill up your gas tank?
At least every week.

{eight} have you ever been stung by a jelly fish?
No. I found one at the beach one time, but luckily I didn't step on it.

{nine} have you ever been robbed?
I had my car broken into when I was going to UofA. They stole like $10 and a gatorade lol.

{ten} what is the worst haircut you’ve ever had?
My senior year, about a week and a half before prom. I went to a hair school- big mistake. The girl died my hair platinum blonde, and hacked my hair up. I asked for highlights and lowlights, and layers. Instead she made me look like a barbie with a mullet. So I had to spend the extra money, and go to my normal hairstylist, who had to cut my hair super short, and die my hair dark brown to make it all the same length and color. Luckily, she gave me a discount and saved my hair. It was a nightmare.

Wedding style and colors

One of the first things I was told to do to plan my wedding was choose my wedding colors and style.
I went back and forth quite a bit, but I am finally settled with my decision.

I'm having a country-style wedding in red and blue.
Okay, it sounds a little patriotic, but its not intended to be. Proof:

How cute is that? I would love to have those chairs and the table settings at my reception.

Time to go clean up from Easter dinner last night, yuck.

Extreme couponing

Have you seen the show Extreme Couponing on TLC?
They highlight people who pay something like $6 for $600 worth of groceries. People who have stock piles of groceries in their garages, extra rooms, and every open space in the house. People who I would call hoarders.
For example:

Well, after Thursday' shopping trip, I have my own little stockpile:

Yes, that is under the end-table in my living room.. we live in a one bedroom apartment with no hall closet, and the kitchen pantry was full. Don't worry, I'm not going to turn into a full fledged extreme couponer/ food hoarder.. Those people are obsessed. But I WILL tell you about my shopping trip.

On Thursday, I spent an hour cutting coupons, going through my already cut ones, making my grocery list, and comparing the store ads. Then we were off!
First stop was the commissiary..
Then Vons..
Then Albertsons..
Then Fresh and Easy.
Done.
It took 4 hours, and $225, but guess how much we saved... $80!!
The best deal we got? You guessed it, vitamin water!

What's the most you have ever saved during a grocery trip?

wedding planning

Chris and I got married in a courthouse, and since I have dreamed of my wedding since I was a little girl, Chris promised me an actual ceremony and reception.

We were originally going to have the wedding this March, but due to the fact that we are paying for the wedding all by ourselves, we had to postpone it another year to save up.

Right now, our wedding is planned for next May, but nothing is set in stone with the Navy, so who knows.

Since I am having somewhat of a writer's block right now, I figured "Why not write about my wedding planning adventure?"

So expect some wedding posts asap!

A little more upbeat today

My last post was about my surgery, and how much pain I was in. I will not be complaining in this post. Tomorrow marks one week post surgery, and I'm feeling much better. Still in pain, but not nearly as much.

Good news! I got a call about an interview!
well 2 actually.. Let me explain.
The first was from 24 hour fitness. They called a few days after my surgery asking if I could come in for an interview the next day. I pictured the energy required to get dressed, put real clothes on, walk down two sets of stairs, and drive.. So I said I couldn't make it. Realizing my stupid stupid mistake, I called back, but they already had all the time slots filled. FAIL.
Fast forward to yesterday, 7:30 pm. Another 619 phone call. From who, you ask?
Guitar center!
No, I don't play any instruments, including the guitar. But I have worked for them before, or actually Music and Arts, which they own.
So I'm thinking that I have a good chance at the interview!

Wish me luck!

I survived

I didn't think it would be this painful.
I know everyone handles things differently.
I'm not 'good with pain' or 'bad with pain,' but I know what pain is. I have broke my wrist, dealt with numerous injuries, and injured my lower back.. but none of that prepared me for this.
For those of you who don't know, I had an ovarian cyst removed on Friday. Even though it was laproscopic (they made three small incisions- one above each hip and one down my belly button) it still felt like my stomach was ripped in half.

I was so nervous for my surgery that every doctor and nurse (believe me, there were a lot- balboa hospital is amazing) asked me if my heart rate was normally so high. When the doctor gave me the 'happy medicine' I just started giggling and all I remember is kissing my mom and husband goodbye and then the mask being placed on me.
I don't remember being woken up in the operating room, just the 'recovery room' with the nurses. They asked me if I knew my name and where I was was. "Ashley." "Balboa." Then I remember the pain hitting me, and telling the nurse how bad it was, then getting sick. I remember going back into my own room with my husband and mom, and trying to keep my eyes open when the doctors and nurses spoke to me. Asking for more pain meds twice, and then if I could go for a walk so that I could go home to my own bed. Once I got home, I asked Chris to set me in bed, and I just slept.
The next morning was torture- all of my medicine had wore off, and I felt the pain full force. Sitting up to take vicodin took everything I had. Standing up made my whole body shake from the pain. I took 4 naps Saturday and 4 naps Sunday. Saturday I took so much pain meds and ate so little that I woke up horribly nauseous on Sunday. It took me almost the whole day to get over it.
Today is day three of the recovery, and it is so much easier than the past two days. I am no where near being better, but now I can get in and out of bed myself, sit on the couch for more than an hour, and eat. I even showered last night! lol.

My mom and my husband have been wonderfully supportive. Chris helps me in and out of bed, tells me how strong I am, and spends time with me when all I want to do is lay in bed with my eyes closed. My mom has been taking care of the house, and cooks meals that tempt my lack of appetite. My sister, who went through the surgery herself has also been supportive- the doctor told me I should feel much better the next day after my surgery, and when I woke up feeling worse than the day before, she was the one who told me it was ok to be in pain. Having such a hard time with the pain makes me feel weak, but I am the only one who truly knows my body.

Thank you for all of your get well wishes and prayers!

After thursday comes friday.

Today is Thursday.

Today I am picking up my oh-so-caring mom from the airport (we had a couple bumps in planning, but my mom was very insistant that she would be here for my surgery. I love her!)

Today I am getting the phone call to tell me what time I will be having my surgery.

Tomorrow is the day of my surgery.

Last night was rough, and I know tonight will be the same. Before bed, I had a good breakdown before Chris calmed me down. Then I tossed and turned all night thinking about the surgery, and woke up feeling sooo nauseous. I know that the surgery is minimally evasive, but it still scary to think that I am going under the knife. And even more scary to think that there could be complications, and I could lose my ovary. The doctors have ensured me that the chances are low that they would have to remove it, and that statistics show that you can still conceive with one ovary, but I don't want to have that risk. I want to have children so bad and infertility is the word I fear the most.

My mom will be here until Monday, and I most likely won't be up to blogging for a few days. As soon as I do, I will update you all. Have a good weekend!

Fate

Last night, Chris and I were eating dinner (that he offered to make because I wasn't feeling good : ) when he randomly said, "I know it was fate that we are together. Want to know why?"
"Why, baby?" (smiling)
"Because if we weren't together right now, you would be a poor college student, with a cyst and wisdom teeth that need to come out, and no insurance to cover either surgery.
And you would probably be failing school because the pain would be so bad you would miss a lot of classes because you wouldn't have the vicodin."
"That's very true." (laughing)
"The best part is that I never had to explain any of this to you to get you to marry me; you married me because you loved me."

I have the sweetest husband ever : )

Money

Money has been a big topic in our household lately. Heres allll the reasons why:

1. We have been talking about a new car.
2. We have two debts (a loan and my ring) under $400!
3. I have been looking for a job for 6 months.
4. We are saving for our 'big wedding.'

Right now, Chris is getting BAS until June. With that money, we could make car payments. Until June. and then we would have about 5 months of car payments in our savings. Until it runs out. Then Chris should be E-3 by then, therefore giving him a raise, and allowing us to continue to make car payments. But what if? We try to be so responsible with our money, and its super scary knowing that we are walking such a tight line.

On a lighter note, Chris and I took $280 (some of our income tax money) to the casino yesterday and walked out with $500! Not bad, huh?

(I'm at 30 followers, wooh!)

Excitedddd

I am super excited at the moment.

I just booked a completely free military pin-up photo session! They do everything- hair, makeup, wardrobe, and photos. This is the second session they have done, the first one was for Marine wives and this one for Navy wives. They had 20 open spots and I was on the phone the second they announced the phone number! I have been wanting to do this for so long, and I am so excited!!

Who would I be if I didn't mention their facebook page? Take a look- Operation Petticoat

The only downside is that the photo session is 5 weeks after my surgery. I tried to ask the doctors when I would be allowed to go back to the gym, and they didn't really give me an answer. Seriously- this is the answer I got: "Well, it's a good rule that if you would hesitate to slam on the brakes because it would cause pain, you shouldn't drive. The follow up appointment is two weeks after the surgery, so you should probably wait until at least then." Did she think I asked how long until I can drive? I guess if I can't drive I probably shouldn't be working out lol.  I'm thinking three weeks and I should be good as new.. which only gives me two weeks to get my butt back into shape for the pin-up shots. Oh boy.
